Hydrogen alternative for Norce and Shopware teams
Frntkey is a frontend-as-a-service built on Vue and Nuxt. Different commerce ecosystem (Norce, Shopware) and a different delivery model (product plus implementation) than Hydrogen's Shopify-only React framework.
Hydrogen is Shopify's React-based framework for building custom headless storefronts. It is the natural choice for Shopify merchants. Frntkey is a Vue and Nuxt frontend-as-a-service for Norce Commerce and Shopware merchants. The two products serve different backends and use different stacks.
- Vue and Nuxt stack
- Norce + Shopware native
- Vercel edge hosting
- Agency delivery included
Benefits
Built for Norce and Shopware
Hydrogen only works with Shopify. Frntkey is built for Norce Commerce and Shopware, with Shopify supported on a project basis. If your backend is anything other than Shopify, Hydrogen is not an option. Frntkey is.
Vue and Nuxt, not React
Hydrogen is a React framework on React Router 7. Frntkey is built on Vue and Nuxt. Both stacks are mature and well-supported, but the choice matters for hiring, long-term maintenance, and the rest of your engineering organization.
Vercel hosting and agency delivery
Hydrogen storefronts run on Shopify's Oxygen edge platform. Frntkey runs on Vercel and ships with implementation by Nordic Web Team. You get a product license and a team that has shipped dozens of headless storefronts, not a framework to assemble yourself.
Storyblok CMS included
Frntkey bundles Storyblok with ready-made blocks, multi-language support, AI-based translation, campaign countdowns, and time-controlled content scheduling. Hydrogen is just the frontend layer. Pairing it with a CMS like Sanity, Contentful, or Storyblok is a separate scope and a separate vendor relationship. With Frntkey, the CMS contract, the integration code, and the ready-made block library all ship in the same product.
What Hydrogen is
Hydrogen is Shopify's open-source React framework for building custom headless storefronts on Shopify. It is distributed as the @shopify/hydrogen npm package and is built on React Router 7. Hydrogen storefronts read data from Shopify through the Storefront API and the Customer Account API.
Hydrogen pairs naturally with Oxygen, Shopify's global edge hosting platform based on Cloudflare's workerd runtime. Oxygen is included at no extra cost on paid Shopify plans, which makes the Hydrogen and Oxygen combination free at the framework and hosting layer for Shopify merchants. Hydrogen ships on a quarterly calendar-versioned release cadence.
The product is mature. Brands including Allbirds and Gymshark have run on Hydrogen in production. For Shopify merchants who want a custom storefront with full React control, Hydrogen is the obvious choice and the one Shopify recommends.
Where Frntkey differs
Frntkey is a frontend-as-a-service for headless commerce, built on Vue and Nuxt. The primary backends are Norce Commerce and Shopware. Shopify can be connected on a project basis, but it is not the default integration. This is the headless architecture pattern applied as a product, not as a framework.
The practical differences with Hydrogen:
- Backend scope. Hydrogen is Shopify-only by design. Frntkey is Norce-and-Shopware-first, with other API-first commerce engines supported on a project basis.
- Framework. React Router 7 versus Vue and Nuxt. Both are credible long-term choices, but they affect hiring in different ways depending on the region and team.
- Hosting model. Hydrogen on Oxygen is tightly coupled to Shopify's edge runtime, with Shopify-specific bindings. Frntkey runs on Vercel's edge with neutral CDN behavior.
- Delivery model. Hydrogen is a framework. You build the storefront yourself, or hire a Shopify agency to do it. Frntkey is a product license that includes implementation by Nordic Web Team.
- Bundled CMS. Every Frntkey project includes Storyblok with ready-made blocks, multi-language support, and time-controlled content. Hydrogen has no bundled CMS and is typically paired with Sanity, Contentful, or Storyblok separately.
- B2B baseline. Frntkey ships pre-built B2B features such as price lists, order history, quickorder, invoice payment, and customer-specific pricing. On Hydrogen these are built per project, often against Shopify's B2B-on-Plus features.
Side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | Hydrogen | Frntkey |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Shopify React framework | Decoupled frontend-as-a-service |
| Architecture | React Router 7 framework (DIY assembly) | Separate Nuxt app, API-connected, shipped ready |
| Backend support | Shopify and Shopify Plus only | Norce (native), Shopware, Shopify on project basis |
| Backend portability | Locked to Shopify | Frontend survives a backend change |
| Frontend hosting | Oxygen (Shopify edge on Cloudflare workerd) | Vercel edge network |
| Frontend stack | React Router 7 (TypeScript) | Vue + Nuxt + Tailwind CSS |
| Bundled CMS | None (pair with Sanity / Contentful / Storyblok separately) | Storyblok included with ready-made blocks |
| Delivery model | Framework you build with (DIY or hire Shopify agency) | Product license + implementation by Nordic Web Team |
When Hydrogen is the right pick
There are clear cases where Hydrogen wins:
- Your commerce backend is Shopify or Shopify Plus, and that is not changing.
- Your team is React-native, with experience in React Router (or Remix before it).
- You want to use Oxygen's free edge hosting included with paid Shopify plans.
- You want first-party Shopify support for the framework, including features like Storefront MCP for AI shopping assistants.
Those are real reasons. If they apply, Hydrogen is almost always the right answer. Frntkey is not trying to be a better Shopify frontend than Hydrogen.
When Frntkey is the right pick
Frntkey is the better fit when:
- The backend is Norce or Shopware, or is moving there.
- The team prefers Vue and Nuxt to React, or wants to staff Nordic frontend talent.
- You want a partner who delivers the implementation, not a framework you build against.
- B2B features need to be production-ready out of the box, not assembled per project.
- Nordic payment, checkout, search, and CRM integrations such as Klarna, Walley, Vipps, Voyado, Hello Retail, and Lipscore are part of the requirement set.
The honest summary
Hydrogen is Shopify's first-party headless framework. If Shopify is the backend, Hydrogen is the right place to start. Frntkey is not a Shopify-first product and does not pretend to be.
If the backend is Norce or Shopware, and the team wants a productized frontend rather than a framework to build against, Frntkey is the case worth evaluating.
