Alternative

Hyvä alternative for teams looking past Magento

Hyvä is a Magento theme. Frntkey is a decoupled frontend on Vue and Nuxt. Different architecture, different backend portability, different reasons to choose each.

Hyvä is a lightweight Magento frontend theme on Tailwind and Alpine.js. It is the right answer for Magento merchants who want a fast theme upgrade. Frntkey is a different category of product: a decoupled frontend that runs separately from the commerce backend. The comparison is really frontend versus theme, not Frntkey versus Hyvä head to head.

  • Decoupled architecture
  • Backend portable
  • Norce + Shopware native
  • Vercel edge hosting

Benefits

Decoupled frontend, not a Magento theme

Hyvä is a Magento frontend theme. It replaces Luma with Tailwind and Alpine.js, but the rendering still happens inside Magento. Frntkey is a decoupled frontend. It runs on Vercel, talks to the backend over APIs, and is not bound to any single platform's render pipeline. The difference matters when you want to swap backends, target multiple channels, or scale frontend hosting independently.

Backend-portable

Hyvä only works on Magento and Adobe Commerce. Frntkey is built around Norce and Shopware, with Magento, Shopify, and BigCommerce supported on a project basis. If your backend is on Magento and you intend to stay there, Hyvä is a strong choice. If you are evaluating a backend change, Frntkey gives you a frontend that survives that move.

Independent of Magento's frontend stack

Hyvä sits inside the Magento monolith and inherits Magento's frontend constraints, including its checkout, theme cache, and module system. Frntkey is a separate Nuxt application with its own hosting, its own caching, and its own integration set. The boundary between frontend and backend is clean and explicit.

Pre-built commerce integrations

Frntkey ships with native integrations for Klarna, Walley, Vipps, Svea, Voyado, Hello Retail, Lipscore, Retain24, Meilisearch, and Storyblok. Hyvä relies on Magento extension compatibility — over 1,000 Magento extensions today carry Hyvä-compatibility modules, but each one remains its own integration project. The merchant still scopes, installs, configures, and maintains each extension. With Frntkey, the integration set is maintained as part of the product.

What Hyvä actually is

Hyvä is a Magento 2 frontend theme. It was launched in 2021 by Willem Wigman as a lighter, faster alternative to Magento's default Luma theme. The core Hyvä Theme is free and open-source under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licenses. Paid products in the Hyvä family include Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä UI, and Hyvä Commerce, sold as an annual subscription bundle.

The stack is Tailwind CSS plus Alpine.js, replacing Magento's traditional Knockout.js, jQuery, and RequireJS. The result is much faster pages and a simpler developer experience for Magento agencies. Over 7,000 merchants use Hyvä today, and many Magento agencies have made it their default frontend.

The important thing to understand is the architecture. Hyvä lives inside Magento. Pages still render through Magento's frontend area. Hyvä replaces the theme layer with a lighter one, but the boundary between frontend and backend is the same as Magento has always had.

How Frntkey is structurally different

Frntkey is not a theme. It is a separate Nuxt application that talks to the commerce backend over APIs. The frontend code lives in its own repository, deploys to Vercel, and renders independently of the commerce platform's render pipeline. This is the headless architecture model — frontend and backend as separate, API-connected systems.

The practical implications:

  • Backend portability. A Frntkey frontend can move from one commerce backend to another without rebuilding the frontend from scratch. A Hyvä theme is, by definition, a Magento theme.
  • Frontend hosting. Frntkey scales on Vercel's edge network, with cache invalidation and asset optimization independent of the commerce backend. Hyvä inherits the Magento server's capacity.
  • Integration model. Frntkey ships pre-built integrations for Klarna, Walley, Vipps, Svea, Voyado, Hello Retail, Lipscore, Retain24, Meilisearch, and Storyblok. Hyvä relies on Magento extension compatibility — over 1,000 Magento extensions today carry Hyvä-compatibility modules, but each one remains its own integration project.
  • Backend choice. Frntkey works with Norce (native), Shopware, and other API-first commerce engines. Hyvä only works with Magento and Adobe Commerce.

When Hyvä is the right pick

There are clear cases where Hyvä is the better fit:

  • Your backend is Magento and you are not planning to leave it.
  • Your team is a Magento agency or in-house Magento team — the skills transfer directly.
  • You depend on Magento extensions that have Hyvä-compatibility modules. Reusing them inside Hyvä is cheaper than rebuilding the same features in a decoupled frontend.
  • You want the lower frontend cost of a theme upgrade rather than the higher initial cost of a decoupled architecture.

Those are real, valid reasons. For many merchants happy with Magento, Hyvä is the cheapest way to a faster store.

When Frntkey is the right pick

Frntkey is the better fit when:

  • The backend is Norce or Shopware, or is moving there.
  • The Magento commitment is uncertain. A decoupled frontend-as-a-service protects the frontend investment when the backend changes.
  • You need multi-channel reach (web, mobile app, kiosks) from one frontend codebase.
  • B2B features like price lists, quickorder, order history, and invoice payment are core requirements, and you want them prebuilt rather than assembled from Magento extensions.

The honest summary

The difference between Hyvä and Frntkey is not which one is faster or better looking. It is architectural. Hyvä is a theme for one specific commerce platform. Frntkey is a frontend that is portable across platforms.

If Magento is your platform for the next five years, Hyvä is the most practical frontend choice. If Magento is one option among several, or you are already on Norce or Shopware, the frontend should not be locked to a single backend. That is the case Frntkey is built for.
